The weekly retrospective gives a summary of trends in acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19 and influenza (influenza virus) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Trends of the week

COVID-19: slight decrease in the number of cases and the positivity rate of COVID-19.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): slight decrease in the number of RSV cases.

Influenza: increase in the number of influenza cases.

COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2

From 18 to 24 December 2023 (week 51), the number of people testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 dropped to 686 cases, compared to 790 cases the previous week (-13%).

The positivity rate fell to 26% compared to 30% the previous week. The viral concentration detected in wastewater is decreasing[1].

The latest sequencing data available for weeks 46-48 show a preponderance of the BA.2.86 variant (43.9%) (95% CI: 34.8-53.0%) followed by the XBB.1.9 variant (29.8%) (95% CI: 21.4-38.2%). [2]

Influenza

For the week of 18 to 24 December 2023 (week 51), the number of influenza cases reported by laboratories increased to 375 cases compared to 254 cases in the previous week, presenting an increase of 48%.

This data largely overlaps with LNS sentinel surveillance, which indicates a high circulation of RSV, influenza viruses, rhinoviruses and SARS-CoV-2. [2]
