In response to the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and at the request of the Turkish government, Luxembourg is stepping up its humanitarian support to the affected populations by offering in-kind donations to Turkey.

The Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MAEE) has donated 8,000 sleeping bags, 2,000 hygiene kits and 12 electricity generators worth €500,000. In close cooperation with the Turkish Embassy in Luxembourg, the Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs also covered the transport costs of the in-kind donations that were collected by the Embassy.

The donations also include 236 pallets of medical consumables worth a total of €250,000, provided by the Ministry of Health and the Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Hôpitaux (FHL), such as surgical masks, compresses, syringes, etc.

In addition, Luxembourg-based B Medical Systems, a global manufacturer and distributor of high-quality medical equipment, donated 50 transport boxes for medicines and blood infusions.

The donations will be transported by two charter flights operated by the national cargo carrier Cargolux and co-funded by the Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs and the European Union. The first flight left this morning, while the second is scheduled for a later date.

The collection and transport of the emergency supplies was coordinated by the Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, in close cooperation with the Luxembourg Embassy in Ankara, and carried out in collaboration with several Luxembourg actors, namely the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Service (CGDIS) and actors from the private sector.

Finally, it should be recalled that Luxembourg mobilised immediately after the earthquakes to provide initial emergency aid to the affected populations. Luxembourg Cooperation is contributing a total of almost one million euros to support the humanitarian operations of several partners active in Turkey and Syria, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Luxembourg humanitarian NGOs Handicap International Luxembourg, Care in Luxembourg and the Caritas Foundation. The latter intervene mainly in Syria to respond to the most urgent needs of people affected by the earthquakes by providing food assistance, shelter and heating, as well as medical aid. Thus, in addition to its support for Turkey, Luxembourg is devoting more than 50% of its total financial contribution to supporting the Syrian population.
