New COVID-26 cases - Weekly review: 26 October - 1 November

The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 is up sharply with 4,701 cases for the week of 26 October to 1 November, compared to 3,388 cases for the previous week (+39%). ​ The number of identified contacts also increased to 12,562 (+26%). The average age of those diagnosed as COVID-19 positive increased slightly from 40.3 to 41.2 years. ​

The number of PCR tests carried out amounts to 76,614 compared to 61,109 the previous week.

As of 1 November, the number of active infections was 8,224 (compared to 4,683 on 25.10.), while the number of people healed increased from 9,570 to 10,716. During the week in question, there were 14 new deaths related to COVID-19, compared to 12 the previous week. The average age of the deceased is 82 years.

The increase in the number of newly positive people has been accompanied by an increase in the number of patients in hospitals, especially in normal care.

The effective reproduction rate (R) fell from 1.62 to 1.19 while the positivity rate on the tests carried out was 6.14% (average of the week) against 5.54% the previous week.

The 7-day incidence rate is 750 per 100,000 residents, respectively 1.292 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over 14 days. It has increased again in all age groups. The 15-29 age group still stands out as the most affected, followed by the 45-59 age group, as well as the 75+ age group. People aged 60-74 experienced the largest increase. The incidence among young people of 0-14 remains about half that of adults.

Quarantine  and isolation

For the week of 26 October to 1 November, 8,149 people were in quarantine (5,531 in the previous week) and 6,251 in isolation (3,241 in the previous week).

Contamination

The rate of contaminations whose source is not clearly attributable remains high. In view of the high number of new infections, the identification of sources is currently not possible for all cases.

Waste water monitoring in Luxembourg as part of SARS-CoV-2

The latest CORONASTEP report drawn up by the LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology) shows that between the beginning and the end of the week of 26 October, SARS-CoV-2 RNA flows in wastewater decreased slightly in some treatment plants while they increased in others. However, the levels of contamination observed in all treatment plants continue to show high values, indicating a high prevalence of the virus in wastewater.
